Noolingo provides two study modes: flashcard mode and quiz mode. Before studying, understanding how Noolingo measures your mastery will help you use these modes better.
Noolingo calculates three core metrics for each note based on the FSRS algorithm: difficulty, stability, and retrievability.
Retrievability represents the probability that you currently remember this content. The algorithm uses this metric to calculate the optimal time for your next review.
Difficulty reflects how hard this content is for you. Content that's easily forgotten has higher difficulty, and the system will schedule more frequent reviews.
Stability indicates how long memory can last after learning once. Higher stability means you've mastered the content better, and review intervals can be longer.
Mastery Level is a derived value calculated based on these metrics, ranging from 0 to 1, representing how much of a piece of content is completed in your learning plan. It primarily depends on stability: the longer memory can last after learning once, the higher the mastery level.
The reason we say "completed in your learning plan" is because you can customize: when a note's stability reaches a certain value, it's considered complete. This allows you to adjust the "mastery" standard according to your learning goals.
Flashcard mode is Noolingo's core learning method. In this mode, the system draws notes in due status from the current notebook (if you enter from a notebook) or all notes into the study queue.
How It Works
Each time you see a flashcard, you need to try to recall the answer. Then provide feedback: correct or incorrect. This feedback is used to:
Default Settings
By default, if you answer incorrectly, the card will automatically reappear in the study queue later until you answer correctly. If you answer the same card incorrectly multiple times, its difficulty will quickly increase, and the system will schedule more frequent reviews to help you consolidate.
Advanced Mode
In advanced mode, you'll see 4 rating buttons instead of 2. In addition to "Correct" and "Incorrect," there are:
Easy: Indicates this content is too simple for you and doesn't need such frequent reviews. Choosing this gives additional rewards, making review intervals longer.
Forgot: Indicates you have no impression at all and need to relearn. Choosing this has additional penalties, making the system recalculate the learning plan.
Advanced mode lets you control the learning pace more finely. For content you've already mastered, you can reduce review frequency; for forgotten content, you can strengthen consolidation.
Quiz mode uses large language models to generate quiz questions. Noolingo provides your learning data and note content as context to the AI, allowing it to design reasonable, well-suited exercises.
How AI Generates Questions
The AI analyzes your note content and learning situation:
Based on this information, the AI generates quizzes containing various question types, such as multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, short answer, etc., helping you comprehensively test knowledge mastery.
Two Usage Modes
You can choose two ways to use quiz results:
Automatically Update Review Data: Quiz results automatically map to flashcard mode. If you answer incorrectly in a quiz, the corresponding flashcard will be scheduled for review in flashcard mode. This allows both modes to work seamlessly together.
For Checking Only: You can also choose to just use quizzes to check if there are any gaps without automatically updating review data. This lets you use quizzes to evaluate learning effectiveness while maintaining your original review plan.
Choosing Quiz Range
In review options, you can choose the note range covered by quiz questions:
The "Well-Mastered" option is particularly useful. When you think you've mastered certain content, you can use quizzes to verify and see if there are really no gaps.
Through notebook settings, you can define different review frequencies for different notebooks. Noolingo provides five levels, with "Standard" as the default, similar to standard settings in other flashcard software.
Adjusting Study Frequency
If your study pressure is too high, you can lower the frequency of certain notebooks. For example, some content that's just "for reference" doesn't need to be reviewed as frequently as important knowledge points.
If you want certain content to be reviewed more frequently, you can increase the frequency. This is particularly useful for important exam content or knowledge that needs to be mastered quickly.
Different review frequencies suit different learning scenarios. You can adjust according to your needs. Refer to the Note Management documentation to learn more about notebook settings.
To help you maintain learning enthusiasm and ensure better learning outcomes, Noolingo has a check-in mechanism.
Completing Goals
You only need to complete 20 content study sessions per day to complete the check-in (after all, starting is the most important). This goal is set low so you can easily begin and gradually build learning habits.
Reward Mechanism
Completing consecutive check-ins can earn you:
Check-ins aren't meant to pressure you but to help you build continuous learning habits. Completing small daily goals accumulates into significant progress.
Flashcard mode and quiz mode each have their characteristics:
Flashcard Mode is suitable for quick review and memory consolidation. When you need to review large amounts of content daily, flashcard mode's efficiency shines.
Quiz Mode is suitable for in-depth testing and gap-filling. When you want to test learning effectiveness or understand knowledge more comprehensively, quiz mode can provide more challenging exercises.
Both modes can be used together: use flashcard mode for daily reviews and quiz mode for periodic effectiveness testing. This maintains memory while ensuring true mastery.
Noolingo's goal is to let you learn in the way that suits you best. No matter which mode you choose, it's all for better knowledge mastery.
